Angina, or Angina Pectoris is the pain causes by your heart muscle not getting enough blood, and not enough of the oxygen contained in the blood. This is caused by a restricting or spasm of the heart's arteries.

A Quick Guide to Angina
By Warren Tattersall

Angina is often first noticed as a pain in the general area of the chest. It may be a strong pain feeling like a vice is pressing on your chest that makes it hard to breath or it may be a light sensation just feeling like heartburn or indigestion. It is normally and indicator that the heart is not getting enough blood, maybe due to reduced blood flow in your arteries which leads to an insufficient oxygen supply to the heart.

That is then a symptom, and major indicator, of coronary heart disease so it is critical that you investigate it and take it seriously.

Looking deeper into this we find that there are the three types of angina. Knowing the differences in these condition is critical as it tells you how to treat your condition.

The three types of angina are:

Stable Angina. This is the most commonly experienced form of angina attack. It generally occurs when the heart is under pressure and working harder than usual. Stable angina can normally be predicted as it has a regular pattern based on your activities. If you know you have stable angina, you can learn to recognize the pattern and predict when the pain will occur.

The pain usually goes away in a few minutes, normally less than 5, if you rest or if take your angina medicine.

Stable angina isn't a heart attack, but it is a key indicator that a heart attack more likely in the future.

Unstable Angina. Unstable angina doesn't follow a defined pattern like you expect to find with stable angina. It can occur with, or without, physical exertion and it is not relieved by rest or by medicine.

An unstable angina attack is very dangerous and you need to get medical treatment immediately. An attack like this may be a precursor to a full blown heart attack and getting to a doctor quickly may save your life or at least can significantly reduce the amount of damage the heart muscle suffers.

Variant (Prinzmetal's) Angina. A variant angina attack is not common and usually occurs while you're resting. The pain of such an attack can be severe. It usually happens between midnight and early morning. This type of angina is relieved by medicine or with the use of Nitrous Oxide products.

There is a form of angina called cardiac syndrome X. In this form, there is neither a spasm or any detectable block in the coronary arteries. In some people, the pain and pressure in the chest may be a result of a temporary narrowing of the smaller arteries of the heart. No one knows what causes this, but it may be the result of a chemical imbalance in the heart or abnormalities in the arteries.

Fairly recently there was a Nobel Prize for medicine awarded for medicine for studies into Nitrous Oxide and how it will massively reduce the risk of these attacks happening in the night time. The attacks are accompanied by a drop in Nitrous Oxide and the studies that showed the effect of taking supplements to prevent this drop were of such significance that the Nobel Prize was awarded for it.

One of that team is Louis Ignarro, Ph.D, who has gone on to assist in developing a commercial product to address the problem.

Whichever of these variations of angina you have experienced it is important that you discover more about it and put into practice some management strategies to ensure that the problem does not become any more serious or cause further damage to your health.
