A Growing Concern: Childhood Hypertension

Angina Add comments

High blood pressure, or hypertension, was long thought to be an adult problem, with the incidence increasing among older age groups. But nowadays, higher numbers of children suffer from hypertension, and more attention is being paid to this situation. Some studies indicate that up to 6% of teenagers and 1% of children below the age of 12 suffer from this problem. If a child’s blood pressure is higher than 95% of the children from the same race, gender and age group, he or she fits into the category of juvenile hypertension. To identify the cause of hypertension in children is becoming a significant concern.

Everyone recognizes that there are more and more obese people in the U.S. each year. That this situation is not confined to adults and can affect even children is a factor that is sometimes ignored. One-third of the child population of this nation belong in the obese category, which is a highly disturbing statistic. This is the main cause for hypertension in children.

The connection between obesity and hypertension is still being researched, but the fact that it is a cause of hypertension in children as well as being one of the main causes of hypertension in adults is an established fact. And this is the one factor that can be easily controlled without the need for any medical intervention. If kids are encouraged to be outside more often, the natural energy they’ve got will make them engage in physical activities that will burn additional calories. This will go far in eliminating a key cause of hypertension in kids.

Absence of physical activity or exercise is not always the sole reason for being overweight, however. A reason for obesity and the consequent cause of hypertension in children can be genetic. Children of parents affected with illnesses such as obesity or diabetes should be tested for the presence of any such genetic or hormonal disorders and should be treated immediately.

High blood pressure in kids is often caused by poor dietary habits. Children are drawn towards junk food and bad eating habits. Foods that contribute to high blood pressure in kids are typically fast foods, and teenagers like to congregate in these places. The consumption of the unhealthy food increases dramatically once there.

The causes of hypertension in children can also include a number of medical conditions that aren’t always obvious. These disorders include sleep apnea, lupus, kidney problems and glandular disorders. Even psychological issues can cause a child to overeat. If a child is found to be suffering from hypertension, it is best to consult a doctor, even if obesity seems to be the obvious cause. Children may also have hypertension for other reasons which need to be looked at.

High blood pressure is a serious problem, particularly forms such as malignant high blood pressure. It’s important that you do whatever you can towards effective high blood pressure control.
