Angina is a sub branch of Acute Coronary Syndrome.
WHAT IT IS Angina occurs when the arteries supplying the heart muscle do not supply enough oxygen to the cardiac muscle. This is usually secondary to build up in these arteries but there have been cases of generalised hypoxia (lack of oxygen circulating throughout the body) causing angina. The cardiac muscle becomes starved of oxygen and becomes ischeamic for a period of time causing chest discomfort.
CAUSES The main causes of angina are exercise in someone who has poor coronary arteries. Therefore the simple task of resting will take the pain away. There is UNSTABLE ANGINA though that can happen at any time and is resolved by taking anginine – a medication that is sprayed, placed under the tongue or applied via skin patch that dilates the coronary arteries allowing the right amount of blood to get through.
SYMPTOMS chest discomfort, tingling arms, neck, shoulder or jaw pain
DANGERS this is part of acute coronary syndrom and if the angina becomes unstable angina the person is at risk of suffering a heart attack (which is where the ischeamia continues on and becomes necrotic – dead heart muscle)
