Angina – The Death Warrant
By Ramani Iyer
Angina is a heavy, tight squeezing pain in the chest due to insufficient oxygen supply to heart. It generally occurs when the heart works hard and requires more oxygen: This could be during exercise, at times of stress, in extremes of temperature, or soon after a meal. The pain develops at the same point in daily activity: viz. on climbing stairs or at a certain point in the daily walk, etc.,
The pain often radiates through the left shoulder, arm, or jaw and sustains for up to 15 minutes. This pain could be intense for some, while others may feel only a mild discomfort- Some individuals have no symptoms at all-”A Silent Heart Attack.”
Other symptoms include sweating, nausea, vomiting, anxiety, shortness of breath, ringing in the ears, loss of speech, dizziness, fainting. Regardless of the level of discomfort, angina is a gravely dangerous situation because it is often the warning bell of a full heart attack, when blood supply to heart is fully stopped.
Not all chest pain or discomfort is angina. Chest pain or discomfort can be caused by a heart attack, lung problems (such as an infection or a blood clot), heartburn, or a panic attack. However, all chest pain should be checked by a doctor.
Types of Angina
There are three types of angina. 1) stable, 2) unstable, and 3)variant It is essential to know the differences among these types.
Stable angina.
Stable angina is the most common type. It occurs when the heart works harder than usual. (Exercise, climbing stairs, etc)
There is a regular pattern to stable angina. After several episodes, you learn to recognize the pattern and can predict when it will occur.
The pain usually reduces in a few minutes after you rest or take your angina medicine.
Stable angina is not a heart attack, but it is quite likely that you will have a heart attack in the future.
Unstable angina.
Unstable angina is a very dangerous condition that demands emergency treatment. It is a sign that a heart attack could occur very soon. Unlike stable angina, it does not follow a pattern. It can occur without physical exertion and is not relieved by rest or medicine.
Variant angina.
Variant angina is rare. It usually occurs at rest. The pain can be severe and usually occurs between midnight and early morning. It is relieved by medicine.
Major risk factors for angina include family history of premature heart disease, cigarette smoking, diabetes, high cholesterol, and high blood pressure.
